Only a device? It is of course, everyone’s favourite android, Mr Data. I wanted to explore the idea of Data having to defend his own sentience, what that must be like, with waves of emotions that he cannot always understand. It struck me as incredibly lonely. Thank goodness he has La Forge (and Spot of course!)

I grew up with TNG. I remember piling onto the sofa with my younger brothers to watch it and scaring each other talking about the Borg. I’d think about what role on the ship I would be able to do (and fretted that my average grades in maths and science would mean engineering or scientific officer were out of reach!) At the time I felt a bit of a dork for liking it so much, but now it’s a delight finding others who love it as much as I do!

I chose to illustrate Data because he was always my favourite. There’s something oddly touching and innocent about the joy he has

and his struggles to become more human.

Data reflects a sense of wonder and that’s something I think Star Trek does so well – remind us of that inner kid who just wanted to explore the stars.
